Blue Card Spain
The EU Blue Card is a special work and residence permit that allows the holder to access the job market in the EU.
Foreign highly qualified workers that want to settle down in Spain, and the enterprises that want to hire them, have different alternatives when it comes to processing the necessary residency and work permit.
First of all, the definition of a highly qualified worker under Spanish immigration regulations is a person who holds the necessary degree (graduated from a program of higher education with a duration of at least 3 years) or, exceptionally, relevant work experience of at least 3 or 5 years (depending on the case) can be considered.
A similar simplified procedure applies to highly qualified workers already employed by a company of the same group or associated, for which a special permit for intra- company transfers can be obtained, though the conditions in terms of social security coverage and other conditions may vary with respect to an employee hired directly by the Spanish branch.
Lastly, highly qualified workers that cannot obtain their work permit under these regulations due to the characteristics of the employing company, can be eligible for a so called EU Blue card. The procedure to obtain this permit is slightly longer and more complicated in terms of documentation that the previously mentioned, but the permit does have the advantage of providing better possibilities for mobility within the EU for the worker, who can also benefit from the time spent in any EU country on this type of permit, to eventually obtain a long term residency permit.
